A Soldier will open the show for REO Speedwagon, Styx and Blue Oyster Cult when they perform at Fort Knox, Ky., June 23, as part of the Army Concert Tour.
Through a partnership with Army Entertainment and The Midwest Rock 'n' Roll Express, one solo guitar artist will be selected by the promoters to showcase their talent in front of an audience of thousands in the "Rock Star for a Day" contest.
"The contest helps us promote the tour at Fort Knox, and gives us the opportunity to showcase Soldier talent," said Scott Radosevich, Army Concert Tour Program Manager, "When we approached the artists' management, they loved the idea, especially given that fact Fort Knox is the only military date on the entire 26-city tour."
No special props, effects or choreography are allowed. The winning performer will be provided with a microphone and patch into the sound board for a guitar.
The winner and his or her guest will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the show, to include airfare, lodging, two tickets to the concert and access to the VIP area, $250 cash, and a meet-and-greet session with the headline performers.
"This is a unique 'once in a lifetime' opportunity for talented Soldiers to compete to be the opening act for a major classic rock tour," Radosevich said. "It also allows Army Entertainment to give something back to our warriors, and it's positive exposure for the Army, showing that Soldiers are more than just war fighters."
To be eligible to compete, Soldiers must be based in the continental U.S., must not have any pending adverse actions, and must have their commander's consent to come to Fort Knox to perform. The contest is open to Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve Soldiers.
To enter, musicians must upload a video audition consisting of one solo performance video before 2 p.m. (CST) June 6, 2012.
A panel of judges from the Installation Management Command's Army Entertainment office will narrow the videos received to the top five acts. The show promoter, The Midwest Rock 'n' Roll Express, will make the final selection.
"Even if they don't win, this is great exposure for our talented Soldiers," Radosevich said, "and it allows Army Entertainment another avenue to discover new talent to support other programs like the U.S. Army Soldier Show."
