2009 All Army Men's Basketball Team

Day One

The All Army Men’s Basketball team suffered a disappointing loss on the opening day of play at the Armed Forces Basketball Championship conducted at Naval Support Activity-Mid-South in Millington, TN.

The Army men led at the half 26-24. They were down by eight midway through the second period, but pulled back within one with a minute left in regulation. Their attempt to hit the 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game fell off the mark and they lost 62-59. Three Army players were in double figures – Reservist SGT Vernardo Harris had 15 points, and SGT Russell Queener (Fort Huachuca, AZ) and SPC Tim James (Fort Hood, TX) each had 12 points.

Day Two

The Army men really lost a tough one. Leading by only five at the half 28-23, they pulled way out in the second half and had a 17 point lead midway in the second period. But the Navy kept at it and an Army scoring drought allowed the Navy to get back within 5 by 2:07 remaining and they tied it at 57 with 1:19 to go. Army couldn’t get back in the lead and lost 57-63. Point Guard SGT Ron Bartley (Fort Lee, VA) led the Army scoring effort with 15 points. PFC Montavious Waters (Schofield Barracks, HI) and SPC Tim James (Fort Hood, TX) each tossed in 12.

Day Three

The men had a close, tough game with the Marines, but eventually lost their third game of the tourney.

The Army men fought a good, tough game with the Marines. Army led 42-33 at the half, but the Marines fought back to tie it up with 9:12 remaining. After that, it was nip and tuck until the last minute when the Marines pulled up by 4. Army missed two 3-point attempts near the end to make the final score 78-73. SGT Ron Bartley (Fort Lee, VA) led the scoring effort for Army with 16 points. Fort Hood’s SPC Tim James had a “double-double” with 10 points and 10 rebounds. SSG Andre Hall (Walter Reed AMC, DC) also added 12 points in the loss.

Day Four

Once again, SGT Ron Bartley (Fort Lee, VA) led the scoring effort for Army with 13 points. PFC Montavious Waters (Schofield Barracks, HI) added 12 points, and SSG Andre Hall (Walter Reed) tossed in 10 points towards the loss.

Day Five

The Army men were up by 7 at the half 39-32, and maintained that lead until Navy overtook them with 5:30 remaining.  Navy pulled ahead by 3 but a couple of 3-point shots by SGT Ron Bartley (Fort Lee, VA) kept Army in the game until, with less than 10 seconds to go, Navy went up by 5.  Another 3 pointer by Bartley with 6 seconds left brought the final score to 82-80 with Navy winning and another disappointment for the Army Men. Bartley led the scoring effort for Army with 19 points.  SGT Vernardo Harris (USAR) assisted in the effort with 17 points and 9 rebounds.

Finals
The All Army Men’s Basketball Team exited the Armed Forces Championship with a win they beat the Marine Corps.

The Army men were able to hold off a late Marine Corps attack and clinched their first win of the tourney 74-69 over the Silver Medal winning Marine Corps team. SGT Ron Bartley (Fort Lee, VA) had 16 points including 4 3-pointers. SPC Tim James (Fort Hood, TX) scored 14 points and SGT Terrell Moorer (Fort Campbell, KY) added 11.
